The new version of BRCGS Packaging Materials: key changes and obligations

Since 28 October, the new version of BRCGS Packaging Materials has been available, bringing several notable changes and additional obligations. The introduction of this new version brings important changes that companies certified to the BRCGS Packaging Materials standard need to take into account.

Extended requirements for product safety & quality culture

A notable change in the new version of the standard is the extension of the requirements for product safety & quality culture. This highlights the growing focus on improving the culture surrounding food safety and quality throughout the entire packaging value chain.

Increased importance of allergen management

The new version of BRCGS Packaging Materials also places greater emphasis on managing allergens within production and the management of packaging materials. This reflects the growing concern about allergens and the need to effectively manage the risks they present.

Addition of the blended audit as an extra audit option

Another important change is the addition of the blended audit as an extra audit option. This form of audit is only available for recertification and consists of a documentary audit carried out remotely, followed by an on-site audit to verify the practical implementation of requirements.

Further changes and additions

In addition to the changes mentioned, there are numerous other adjustments in the new version of the standard, including for product fraud, physical contamination (specifically sharp objects) and personal hygiene.

Audits under version 7 from 28 April

From 28 April, audits will be carried out under version 7. It is therefore essential for businesses to prepare in good time for the transition to this new version. For support with this transition, businesses can always contact us.
