Several Belgian and foreign food companies were threatened in 2019 with the poisoning of their products using the dangerous substance oleandrin.

Threat

Several Belgian and foreign food companies were recently threatened with the poisoning of their products using the dangerous substance oleandrin.

The companies involved have likely since taken precautions, and the judicial authorities are searching for those behind the letter. However, vigilance remains essential. The history of Food Defence incidents shows that copy-cats also emerge following such events. It is important to take this into account.

It is therefore time to review your Food Defence plan.

Points to consider

  • Do you have a procedure for receiving threatening letters that may contain an unknown substance?
  • Are your emergency numbers up to date?
  • Are your packages tamper-proof?
  • Do you know Food Security? Food Security supports food companies during and after crisis situations. They also have the right contacts within the Federal Police, who coordinate this type of case to handle it discreetly, quickly and efficiently.
  • In the event of a crisis: notify Food Security immediately via the crisis line 02 736 75 87 for further action.
